About Pag

ISLAND OF PAG / TOWN PAG

Island of Pag is one of the largest islands on the Adriatic coast, 63 km in length

and 5 km in width, with a 269 km long indented coastline, many shingle and sandy

beaches and cliffs in the crystal-clear sea.

Island of Pag is also unique in its vegetation. Trees are the rarest form of vegetation,

as Pas is the kingdom of karst on the Adriatic coast , with a lot of herbs.

Grazing land is full of sage and immortelle; thereofore the taste of sheep's meat

and of the famous Pag cheese made of sheep's milk is absolutely unique.

Town Pag, the cultural center of the island, is located in the pictoresque cove

and along its coastline there are 20 km of shingle beaches.

The 15 th century fortified town was designed by the famous architect and sculptor

Juraj Dalmatinac (George of Dalmatia), and is very proud of its cultural heritage.

The gastronomy of Pag has is based on first-class cheese and sheep's meat,

locally made wine (Paška žutica), prosciutto ham, olives and sea food.

In economy, the town has been traditionally sea-oriented, and since ancient times

has been known for its production of quality salt in undrained natural depressions

in which water leaves a deposit of salt on evaporation.

The town has been preserved, with a number of cultural and historical monuments;

the Rectors palace, the monastery, the tower, baroque-styled balconies and coat of arms

 of noble families.

The world-famous lace of Pag has been made for centuries, each piece of lace is unique, either as decorating or a part of the luxuriant traditional costume of Pag.

Entertainment programs are mostly offered during the summer season.

The well-known attraction is the Pag carnival, which takes place both during winter

and durng summer (the end of July). During the carnival days and the tourist season there are many cultural performances.

The "Cultural Summer of Pag" is a must for all classical music enthusiasts.

The centuries-old tradition includes the prformance known as the "Female Slave of Pag",

as well as folclore and carnival performances.

Summer evenings offer programs to suit everyone's taste: a capella ensambles and choirs, fishermen evenings, open-air music concerts and dances, discotheques and night clubs.
